About Joni Abel
Hi! My name is Joni Abel. I’ve always been in the process of creating something my whole life and am a maximalist at heart. I have played piano since middle school, studied music in college, and was a music teacher for several years. The longer I taught, the more convinced I was that a career change was needed – something to help children and people grow into empowered versions of themselves. I’m currently working as a grant writer and will soon graduate with a Master’s in Social Work to pursue clinical counseling licensure and continue with grant work.
Throughout these changes and search for purpose, creating has been a constant. Art is my stress-relief, a joy-giving, fun, and challenging process. My art combines the things that float around my mind, persistent in their need to be created, with all the color, texture, and weirdness I love. I like to use beautiful pieces from long ago, collaging and adding to them in ways they previously could not have existed. I use digital art, acrylic paints, and mixed media elements. I also make three dimensional pieces, using anything and everything at hand – wood, lights, fabric, flowers, plants, glass, rocks, vintage jewelry, antlers, insects, and more. My favorite creations are those that feel like they have their own personality and comfort, whether it’s a tiny print, a giant canvas, or something else entirely.
I do not have extraordinary ambitions or expectations as an artist. I want to create for myself, and help others create – whether it’s a space in their home using my art, or in learning how to be creative themselves. Good things and encouragement are meant to be shared, and that is why I do what I do.
